AI scientist Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs introduces 3D image generator

A spatial intelligence AI company called World Labs has introduced an AI media converter to turn images such as AI-generated pictures, photos, or even classical art pieces into “3D worlds” that users can interact with or explore.

Led by AI scientist Fei-Fei Li, World Labs says it is building Large World Models (LWMs) and wants to generate in 3D for use cases such as gaming, art, development, engineering, and other fields.

“Most generative AI tools make 2D content like images or videos. Generating in 3D instead improves control and consistency. This will change how we make movies, games, simulators, and other digital manifestations of our physical world,” said World Labs in its blog post.

In samples shared on its website, World Labs invited users to explore various images such as AI-generated fantasy scenes in forests and villages, as well as iconic paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Edward Hopper.

While users could take a very limited 360-degree tour within the images, many details were blurred together and elements often went in and out of focus. People could use their keyboard or the mouse drag function in order to explore the interiors of the images.

The company said it was currently working on the size and fidelity of its AI generated worlds, as well as trying to add more interactive options.

World Labs announced its formation on September 13, 2024.
